CHENNAI: Maya Venkatesan, arrested following complaints of cheating and lodged in the Chennai central prison, has been detained under the Goondas Act. The accused was arrested by the City Crime Branch (CCB) officers a fortnight ago for allegedly cheating some civil contractors of over Rs. 10 crore saying that he had plans to construct a cement factory in Tuticorin district. Many others had even remitted earnest money deposits. When he was arrested and taken for remand, the accused reportedly attempted to open fire against an SI of Police from his pistol. Vadapalani police have registered a case and are investigating. Following this, the police recommended detention of Maya Venkatesan under the Goondas Act, a press note said.
Bank cheated
A borrower, who reportedly cheated a nationalised bank in Chennai by furnishing fake documents, has been arrested and remanded to custody. According to a CCB press note issued here on Wednesday, D. Ramadas of Nehru Nagar, Chromepet, borrowed Rs. 5 lakh from a bank for starting a women's beauty parlour by his wife Savitri on Eldams Road Teynampet. However, as the borrower failed to repay the loan, the bank decided to take action, but found that the documents furnished was fake. After registering a case, the cyber crime police produced Ramadas before Saidapet court.
Lodge owner jailed
A private lodge owner and his manager were remanded to custody on Wednesday on charges of assaulting an inmate. Police said that a youth from Nagapattinam, who was staying in a room of the lodge in Sembium police station limits, had a wordy altercation with the lodge manager, Jayapal last night, which snowballed into a clash today. The youth suffered a fracture because of the clash. Based on a complaint, the police arrested lodge owner Prabhu and his manager Jayapal.
