CHENNAI:
An orphaned female elephant calf, housed at the Arignar Anna Zoo at Vandalur after its rescue from the Hosur forest of Krishnagiri district, is responding to commands of the mahouts.
Zoo authorities say the mahouts have been training the calf for over a month. "The female calf has got accustomed to the mahouts' presence. In fact, even during the night, one of the mahouts has to stay with the animal. Otherwise, she starts searching for him," said a veterinarian at the zoo. According to the zoo vets, the calf's health has improved tremendously since its arrival at the zoological park. Similarly, the feed intake of the calf has increased.
The animals' preferred food is bamboo, with a small amount of leaves and grass besides a mixture of ragi, horsegram and jaggery. Besides, the vets are also feeding the calf calcium and vitamin supplements.
