Campaign on solid waste management

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : The residents covered by the Semmanchery tsunami resettlement and rehabilitation scheme were sensitised to solid waste management recently.

Organised by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, the campaign had members of self-help groups creating awareness of proper garbage disposal among the 2,041 residents accommodated in the area.

A rally was also organised on significance of separate disposal of biodegradable and non-degradable garbage.

Students from government primary school at Semmancherry and Mohammed Sathak College took part in the rally along with the members of SHGs. Tricycles and bins were distributed.

Small economic activities

D. Vivekanandan, managing director of the TNSCB, also inaugurated the small economic activities carried out by the SHGs as part of the Livelihood Support Project funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Children of a government middle school at Semmancherry and a high school at Okkiam Thoraipakkam resettlement area were given notebooks under the sponsorship of Montfort Community Development Society.
