BANGALORE: The author of award-winning books, "Red Earth and Pouring Rain" and "Love and Longing in Bombay", Vikram Chandra released his third book, "Sacred Games" here on Wednesday. Mr. Chandra said the book was in the making for seven years and was published by Penguin India for the first time in the world. "Sacred Games, set in Mumbai, captures the glory as well as the dark side of the astonishing city. The suave Sartaj Singh is on a pursuit and will continue to enthral the readers," he said. He assured the readers that while the new novel was a sprawling, magnificent story of friendship and betrayal, the emotional depth would be resonating with that of the best of literature. The book was awaiting release throughout the world as the rights had been already sold out. The New Delhi-born writer released his first book in 1995 and won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book in 1996 and the David Higham Prize for Fiction. His second book was a collection of linked short stories, released in 1997, won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book in 1998. Mr. Chandra read out excerpts from his anticipated novel with 900 pages. The book, published by Penguin India, is priced at Rs. 650. He was on a five-city tour in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and New Delhi for the launch of his book. He had co-written the script of the Hindi film "Mission Kashmir" directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
