Coimbatore
Effluents in city I have seen colourful waters in Kaveri and Bhavani, thanks to textile industries. Today one can witness colourful water on either of Tiruchy Road right from Venkatalaxmi Kalyanamandapam, Perks, the `pride of Singanallur.' Alongside Uzhavar Sandai one can inhale a variety of smells emanating from effluents of the industries. Many educational insitutions have departments of environment. Will the youth be encouraged to prepare their theses on the effluents in the city? I hope the dynamic Collector will organise a `Marathon walk' on Singanallur Road involving the public, including the elite members of the city, to create awareness on a clean environment. Dr.K.K.Lakshmanan, Tiruchy Road. Support commissioner At last Coimbatore Corporation has a dynamic, intelligent and a good Commisioner after Mr Niranjan Mardi. The Commisioner should be given a free hand to enable him implement development projects. The idea of bringing many places under Coimbatore Corporation limits is good since this will not only bring a lot of revenue but will also result in the good growth of Coimbatore. While laying the city's roads care should be taken to see that they are laid from wall to wall (ditch to ditch), breadthwise, leaving no mud on either side. There should be good co-ordination between variousdepartments. K.Natarajan, Ramnagar. Auto woes Auto-rickshaws in Coimbatore are becoming worse. Recently I travelled from the railway station to Sukrawarpet in an auto. The auto driver took Rs. 30 from me. The same distance in Bangalore will be covered for just Rs. 15. On the way my friend had to get down and when I asked the auto driver to stop he started shouting at me and also used bad language. Even after paying so much, I had to suffer this and take my own vehicle to drop my friend. The high auto charges in Coimbatore have been the complaint of a lot of people. Can charges be fixed as in Bangalore? Suresh Kothari, Sukkrawarpet. Make it easy LIC southern zonal office, Chennai, has asked annuity (JA, JD) policy holders to provide existence certificates to enable it to release annuity cheques. The certificate should be attested by competent authorities such as grade I officer of LIC, a gazetted officer or a registered medical practitioner. This will cause difficulties to many senior citizens in contacting the attestors. It is reasonable to have the certificate attested by local bank officials, who are easily accessible, as invariably all annuity policy holders have bank accounts to which the annuity cheques are credited monthly. Hope LIC will consider this suggestion. B.R. Shetty, Kovaipudur. Relax `no entry' As two wheelers do not pose any hindrance to the smooth flow of traffic in both directions, no entry restriction can be relaxed at least for two wheelers. Because of this restriction the two wheelers have to take a detour to reach their destinations. In the wake of spiralling prices of fuel this is all the more important to reduce uel consumption thereby saving the precious foreign exchange outgo. S. Dhandapani, S.M. Road. Route change Route No 7 plying from Gandhipuram towards Race Course now takes LIC Road to enter Huzur Road near CODISSIA Tower and passes through KG Theatre to reach Race Course. Passengers have to get down at Red Cross Building stop to go to DSP Office, Uppilipalayam and the collectorate. This causes difficulty to aged persons. Instead Route No. 7 can pass through Avinashi Road, DSP stop and proceed towards Race Course. K. Balaraman, K.K. Pudur. Send mail to: cbereaders@thehindu.co.in
