Rain or shine, Independence Day or Republic Day, or any national festival, the Regional Science Centre (RSC) and Planetarium in Kozhikode keeps its doors open to visitors round the year. While a majority of Government institutions and offices remained closed on Independence Day on August 15, the Regional Science Centre functioned with reduced staff strength to ensure that the public, especially children, were not denied an opportunity to visit the museum and other exhibitions. All 28 planetariums functioning under the Government of India are open round the year from 10.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Till 1992, the planetariums remained closed on Mondays. This practice was later stopped following a request from the public to keep the science centre open all seven days of the week. The RSC employees take their holidays on a rotational basis. Often, the working hours of the personnel are also staggered. RSC coordinator V.S. Ramachandran said all scientific personnel at the centre are trained in all types of work, including screening of 3-D films. Hence, shortage of .any staff does not hinder the functioning of the centre. The institution gives priority to up-to-date maintenance, attending to visitors' needs and cleanliness.
