THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Onam Book Fair of the University of Kerala, organised as a prelude to its upcoming International Book Fair, , was inaugurated by Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran here on Thrusday. Various books brought out by the Publications Division of the University can be bought at discounts ranging between 20 and 80 per cent. In his inaugural address, Mr. Sudhakaran said universities should take the initiative to bring out books that showcased the Malayalam language and the culture of the State. Just because the Nobel prize for Literature has not come to Malayalam literature it is not right to assume that there are no world class writings in the language. In fact, there are more classics in Malayalam than there are in English, the Minister said. The universities in the State should be able to preserve this tradition and aid in the growth of the language. In the past, many social leaders set up educational institutions in keeping in mind the social goals of education. It is unfortunate, therefore, that now discussions in the education sector tend more to be on its economic aspects than the social aspects, Mr. Sudhakaran said. Universities should show self-financing institutions how educational institutions should be run with social goals in mind, he added. Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair spoke. Apart from prescribed text books of the University, there are copies of such books as `Kerala Sahitya Charitram' by poet Ulloor S. Paramesara Iyer, `Chithra Ramayanam', 12 volumes of the Hortus Malabaricus (English edition), the seven volumes of the Malayalam Lexicon, selected works of Ilamkulom Krishnan Pillai, the 16 volumes of `Malayala Sahitya Nayakanmar' and the two volumes of the History of the University of Kerala penned by historian A. Sreedhara Menon. Copies of the syllabus and schemes of study of various courses offered by the university can also be purchased at the fair that will be on till November 1.
