Madikeri: The Hindu Jagarana Vedike will organise a convention at Ponnampet in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu on August 24 to create public awareness on the designs of certain religious fundamental groups active in Kodagu, organising president of the vedike, Sadhu Poonacha, said here on Thursday. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Poonacha said the rally would alert the peace-loving people of Kodagu to remain vigilant against certain "terrorist-like" activities that had been going on in the district for sometime now. Over 2,000 persons belonging to a particular community, most of who came from outside, had gathered at Gonicoppa and organised a mass meeting recently. The reason for organising the meeting and its outcome should be made known, he demanded. He said unknown persons who visited households in places such as Virajpet, Gonicoppa, Ponnampet and other areas were frequenting Kodagu. Cow slaughter, though banned, continued in the district in places such as Siddapur and Gonicoppa. In an incident at Thithimathi recently, a vehicle carrying cattle had met with an accident around 3 a.m. and several cows had died. But the persons involved in the transportation covered up the incident by cleaning up the spot by 6 a.m. The police too did not bother to look into it. The vedike would mobilise public opinion against cow slaughter and sale of beef in Kodagu, Mr. Poonacha said. The vedike also opposed the move to allot lands in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh to a particular community in two of the seven sacred hills to construct places of worship there, Mr. Poonacha said. Even contracts to manufacture "laddu", the most sought after "prasada" of the Tirumala temple, were being given to that group, he alleged. Lt. Col. (retd) Machangada B. Karumbaiah would preside over the convention. The swamiji of Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashram, Ponnampet, Sri Jagadatmanandaji, would attend. The State convenor of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Jagadish Karant, would deliver the address. A "Shobha Yatra" would be taken out in the morning from the Ponnampet Junior College to Kodava Samaj, the venue of the convention. Members of the vedike Somaiah, Prabhakar Nellitaya and Bheemaiah were present.
