Gujarat flood situation improves

Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR: The flood situation in Gujarat on Thursday improved considerably with a let-up in rain and reduced discharge from the overflowing dams.

Barring a dozen villages and Broach town in the downstream of the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada, which is still flowing about five metres above 119 metres, the flood alert has virtually been withdrawn from other areas of central Gujarat.

Though most parts of the State, except Kutch district, enjoyed a bright sunshine on Thursday after about a fortnight of rainfall, about a dozen villages and most parts of Dholka town in Ahmedabad district were submerged in floodwaters due to breaches in the Narmada canal near Dholka.

Kutch received about 60 to 125 mm of rainfall on Thursday and the centuries-old Hamirsar lake, main source of water supply in Bhuj, started overflowing after many years.

Normality returned to Ahmedabad, where more than 25,000 people had been evacuated from the low-lying areas.
