Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) adopted a resolution at a public meeting held here on Wednesday urging the Territorial Government to expedite implementation of the Land Reforms Act, as part of the its campaign to seek welfare measures for the farm labourers. The general secretary of the All India Farmers Union and member of the Politburo, K. Varadarajan, the secretary of Pondicherry unit of the CPI (M), V. Perumal, the members of the executive committee of the Tamil Nadu unit, P. Selvasingh and T. Murugan addressed the meeting. The party asserted that land available after the enforcement of the land reforms legislation should be redistributed to the landless farm labourers. The Pondicherry Government should also register the names of the leaseholders. The monthly allowance promised for the unemployed should be paid in keeping with the promise given by the Congress during the Assembly elections and the vacant posts in Government departments should be filled through Employment Exchange.
Other resolutions
Other resolutions adopted at the meeting urged the Centre to include Pondicherry and Karaikal districts in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme and to implement the Food for Work Scheme to benefit the rural poor. Stern measures were also demanded against the private professional colleges that failed to adhere to the Government directives in admitting students under Government quota and also in fixing fees.
