They seek measures for the improvement of their lot

Pondicherry: Volunteers and leaders of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions took out a procession in Pondicherry on Thursday seeking steps for improvement of the conditions of construction workers.

CITU general secretary K. Kalian, who led the rally, submitted a memorandum to the Labour Commissioner. CPI(M) secretary (Pondicherry unit) V. Perumal, CITU secretary K. Murugan and convenor G. Ramasamy participated. The processionists demanded speedy implementation of welfare measures evolved by the administration for the benefit of workers.

They also wanted control of prices of construction materials. The Construction Workers Welfare Board should be sanctioned adequate funds to meet its commitments. A separate officer should be posted to address the grievances of construction workers in Karaikal district.

Construction workers attached to the AITUC (Pondicherry unit) took out a separate rally under the leadership of R. Viswanathan, MLA, from Rajiv Gandhi Square to the Labour Department. They also submitted a memorandum to the Labour Commissioner at the end of the rally.

Later, AITUC secretary V.S. Abishegam told presspersons that the memorandum urged the Government to reduce the subscription fee collected annually from members of the Welfare Board from Rs. 100 to Rs. 50. The Government should sanction monthly financial aid to the aged construction workers. During rainy days when workers remain jobless their families should be extended a relief of Rs. 500 in cash and 50 kg rice. They should be sanctioned free house site pattas with subsidy to construct houses. The financial aid given to their children for education should be available from standard six onwards.
