Numismatics exhibition from tomorrow

A coin researcher from Coimbatore will be conferred with `nanayamamani' title

Pondicherry: The Thondaimandala Numismatics Society is holding a two-day exhibition of old coins, currency notes and antiques at the Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Orleanpet (behind Rajiv Gandhi Municipal Bus Terminal) here on August 19 and 20.

The Society founder-president, T.N. Gobiraman, said here on Thursday that coin researcher and writer, Professor K.A. Thirugnanasambandan from Coimbatore, would be conferred with the `nanayamamani' title in recognition of his contributions to the field of numismatics. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan would inaugurate the exhibition being held as part of the first anniversary celebrations of the Society. Mr. Gobiraman said the fair was to kindle awareness among visitors, particularly youth, to develop hobbies. Numismatics was an effective way to enhance the concentration skills of the youth.

Conduct courses

Mr. Gobiraman appealed to the Governments and university authorities to conduct courses in numismatics so that boys and girls could develop interest in ancient coins and preserve them.

Sahitya Academy awardee Prabanjan, president of Pondicherry Historic Society V. Nallam, and academics and officials from the Union Territory Government would address the visitors.
