Court defers hearing on Monica's plea

Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred its hearing till October a petition filed by Monica Bedi, alleged accomplice of extradited gangster Abu Salem, seeking bail in fake passport cases.

It directed the CBI special court in Hyderabad to complete the trial in two months. On the case in a Bhopal court was concerned, no such direction was given, as it was pointed out that the trial was yet to begin. A three-judge Bench, comprising Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice G.P. Mathur and Justice D.K. Jain, passed this order on a special leave petition filed by Ms. Bedi, challenging the filing of charge sheet against her in a Bhopal court for an offence of cheating and criminal conspiracy and rejecting her plea for bail as well as filing a case in Andhra Pradesh. Senior counsel, K.T.S. Tulsi, appearing for Ms. Bedi, contended she had faced trial for the offence and served a three-year jail term in Portugal. It was a case of double jeopardy for the same offence, which was not permissible under the law. He pleaded for quashing the FIR and releasing her on bail.
