Zonal competitions of debate tournament

HUBLI: Debating was an effective tool for the overall personality development and improvement of communicative skills of students, P. Manivannan, Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, said here on Thursday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the north zone competitions of the State-level debate tournament, "Verbattle-2006", organised by TV House in association with the Information Department.

Recalling his participation in debates when he was a student, Mr. Manivannan called upon students to overcome their initial hesitation to develop the art of public speech. Debating was a wonderful art of communicating one's views on an issue, he said.

Anchor of the programme Deepak Thimaya said such programmes were essential for bringing out the best in children. They helped a student extend his mental horizons, he added.

Vinayaka Ramakrishna, chief executive officer of TV House, explained the objectives of the tournament. Hubli was the centre for the north zone competitions. Bangalore and Mangalore were the centres for the south zone and west zone competitions scheduled to take place this month after the Hubli zonal rounds, he said.

Rachael Ravi, Manager of TV House, was present. Students of seventh to 10th standards from the districts of Gulbarga, Belgaum, Haveri, Dharwad, Gadag, Raichur, Bidar, Bagalkote and Chitradurga participated. The winning teams would take part in the next rounds of competitions to be held in Bangalore.
