Gut-wrenching

The story of the killing of Selwa Wehbe in an Israeli air strike, clutching her baby and two sons, ("Human story behind the headlines," Aug. 16), I am sure, would have shaken everyone with a heart. Israel fails to understand that it is destroying its own dreams by shattering others' dreams. One hopes Israelis will appreciate that human life is precious and a rare gift of god.

The blast that struck Beirut did not destroy the hopes and dreams of a family alone but that of the entire humanity. One can imagine the suffering and fear the family would have undergone at the time of the bombing.

One also wonders whether the seven-year-old Mohammed, seven of whose closest friends died in the war, and who "doesn't have anyone left to play with," will ever grow up to be normal as he has seen so much violence at such a tender age.

Raji Pennieraj,
Madurai, T.N.
