One wonders what prompted the Indian Government to grant Taslima Nasreen a six-month tourist visa and reject her application for renewal of her residential permit. The Bangladeshi writer-in-exile, an indefatigable defender of human rights, is being hounded by fundamentalists in her country. There was a time when India was in the forefront of fighting for the oppressed. It seems the wheel has now turned a full circle for the avowedly secular Congress. It seems to be moving away from the path shown by its tall leaders of the past.
