Taslima's case

One wonders what prompted the Indian Government to grant Taslima Nasreen a six-month tourist visa and reject her application for renewal of her residential permit. The Bangladeshi writer-in-exile, an indefatigable defender of human rights, is being hounded by fundamentalists in her country.

There was a time when India was in the forefront of fighting for the oppressed. It seems the wheel has now turned a full circle for the avowedly secular Congress. It seems to be moving away from the path shown by its tall leaders of the past.

Subramanyam Sridharan,
Bangalore

That the Government should shut the doors on Taslima Nasreen is a matter of shame. Whom is it trying to please?

T.S. Murthi,
Folsom, California
