Malaysia proposal on expressway project

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Malaysia will submit a detailed proposal to India in two-three months on the formation of an all-India expressway, S. Samy Vellu, Malaysian Minister for Works, said here on Thursday.

Recalling that he had discussed twice the idea with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr. Vellu said the project could be executed in a phased manner. Initially, Chennai-Bangalore could be taken up followed by Hyderabad-Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad-Mumbai. His country was willing to invest up to approximately Rs.10,000 crore through one of its government enterprises.

The Minister was talking to the presspersons after inaugurating a three-day seminar on surface transportation organised here by the Tamil Nadu State Board of the All-India Manufacturers' Organisation (AIMO) and the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras.

Commending the Indian Government for implementing the National Highway Development Programme, he said though improvement of the existing highways was important there was a need for building a separate highway. Asked whether Malaysia had carried out any such project in other countries, Mr. Vellu said it had presented one proposal to the Government of Jamaica.
