Police seek custody of suspected SIMI activists

Kochi: The police have moved the court seeking the custody of the five suspected activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) who were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday.

"An application has been moved before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Paravur, and we are hopeful of getting their custody for questioning within a day or two," police sources said.

The activists are: Shaduli, Abdul Rafeeq, Shamaz, Ansar and Nizamuddeen.

Fourteen other suspects — including Zahir Azlem of Chennai — who were released, were under police observation, the sources said. There was progress in the investigation in the case, the sources added.

While 18 persons were taken into custody on Tuesday, Azlem was picked up on Wednesday. — PTI
