Bakre suffers first defeat

NEW DELHI: Tejas Bakre suffered his first defeat in the Abu Dhabi International chess tournament when he surrendered to Russian Grandmaster Sergey Grigoriants with black pieces in the fifth round in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

In Athens, second seed Woman Grandmaster S. Vijayalakshmi succumbed to her third loss in as many rounds when local Fotini Pambalou pulled off a big surprise in the fourth round of the women's section of Acropolis International chess tournament.

The results (involving Indians): At Abu Dhabi (fifth round): Sergey Grigoriants (Rus, 4) bt Tejas Bakre (3); Farid Abbasov (Geo, 3) bt M.R. Lalith Babu (2); S.P. Sethuraman (3) bt Saleh Salem (UAE, 2); Lela Javakshivil (Geo, 2.5) bt Kruttika Nadig (1.5); Aswin Jayaram (2) drew with Abdullah Hassan (UAE, 2); Abdul Hameed el Arousy (2) bt Ramnath Bhuvanesh (1).

At Athens (fourth round): Women: S. Meenakshi (3) bt Maria Ikonomopoulou (Gre, 2); Fotini Pambalou (Gre, 2) bt S. Vijayalakshmi (1); Open: I. Papadopoulos (Gre, 2) drew with Sriram Jha (2).
