Rishad Talati, Hannan Pasha and Ritu Jain set meet records

BANGALORE: Rishad Talati and Hannan Pasha in the boys' under-16 section and Ritu Jain in the girls' under-8 200m rewrote meet records on the opening day of the KPMG-Cadet Bangalore City inter-school athletics meet at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Thursday.

Rishad leapt to a distance of 6.04 metres for the record in the long jump event bettering Harsh Danda's previous mark of 6 metres set in 2004. Coach V.S. Beedu's student had a previous best of 5.5 metres set during the state meet last year.

Hannan Pasha then blitzed through the 400m field in 51.1 seconds, a clear 2.6 seconds ahead of the rest. Hannan's effort bettered Sam Kinsi's three-year-old mark of 52.4 seconds.

Ritu Jain the Vidyashilp Academy lass then ran the 200m in a time of 35.4 seconds to obliterate K.S. Ramya's 2002 mark of 25.7 seconds.

The meet began with a marchpast by students from nearly 180 schools and over 5,000 athletes are participating in this three-day meet.

Manasa, Kedar win

K. Manasa claimed a full point when she upset fancied M. Suraj in the fourth round of the Malleswaram Association FIDE-rated chess championship here on Thursday. In another encounter, Kedar Umesh Vaze defeated higher-rated Balkishen.

On the top board, M. Sanjay came up with a fine display to prevail over Deepak Kumar Payeng.

Tilak MFC in final

Sourav Das scored a goal in each half (third and 60th minutes) and powered Tilak Memorial Football Club to a 2-0 victory over Navaratna FC in the semifinals of the State C division football championship here on Thursday.

Bangalore Mars will meet Universal Club in the other semifinals on Saturday. The final is scheduled for Sunday.

Record entries

The Mandya District Badminton Association along with the People's Education Trust (PET), Mandya will conduct the State badminton championship at the PET Stadium from August 19 to 24, according to H.V. Ravindra, organising secretary and N.C. Sudhir, secretary of the Karnataka Badminton Association.

The championship, which comprises 22 events, has received a record 404 entries. There has been a marked increase in the number of entries from the districts including Mysore, Davangere, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Tumkur, Hubli, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Bhadravati besides Mandya.

The overall prize money is Rs.1.25 lakhs. The junior events will be conducted from August 19 to 22 and senior events, including the men's and women's singles will be played from August 22 to 24.

Rohan Castelino and V. Ruth Misha head the seedings list in the men's and women's singles respectively.

Boys: Under-19 singles: M.D. Anup Kiran. Under-16: Aditya R. Prakash. Under-13: Vinay Hari. Under-10: Mithun Manjunath.

Girls: Under-19: V. Ruth Misha. Under-16: Shurhti Sridhar. Under-13: Taanya Ravi. Under-10: Reshma Karthik.
