Make use of technology in education sector: Governor

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Governor R.L. Bhatia has called for making use of the progress in science and technology in the education sector.

Inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of the High School and Teacher Training Institute, Chettikulamgara on Thursday, Mr. Bhatia said the State should make use of the vast possibilities of modern devises like EDUSAT that facilitate distance education.

The Governor said, in the present times of amazing technological advancement, science and technology was attracting a large number of students. However, one has to remember that technological advancements without human values would be imperfect.

Humanistic training and technological study must be regarded as complementary, rather than contradictory, remarked Mr. Bhatia.

He recounted how Mahatma Gandhi had insisted that moral and spiritual training should be part of education. Mr. Bhatia opined that education was incomplete if it did not invest pupils with a specific purpose in life.

The Governor pointed out that the Indian concept of education had emphasised that the edifice of education needed to be built on the foundation of true devotion and dedication. The saints of the past believed that education should enlighten as well as ennoble future generation, said Mr. Bhatia. "Literacy without enlightenment will not lead you anywhere," noted Mr. Bhatia.

Emphasising on the need for quality education, the Governor said the progress of the country depended on the quality of the education being imparted at various levels.

Whatever be the subject, there should not be any compromise in the standards of education, he said.

Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran presided over the meeting.
