MADURAI: Students of Lady Doak College here have taken up geo-mapping of the streets around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to create a database of civic conditions. This is the second phase of the community project based on Geo-Information System (GIS) taken up by the Department of Physics involving students. With an aim to create a litter-free zone in the areas around the temple, the mapping is primarily concentrating on pavement eateries and garbage-collection points in sub-streets and methods followed for waste disposal. "In the first phase done last academic year, we did the GIS mapping inChithirai, Moola, Masi and Veli streets. The study is now extended to sub-streets, which also have influence on the overall cleanliness," said Beulah Rajkumar, Head, Department of Physics. The study has so far revealed that garbage collection points do not match the number of platform vendors and pavement eateries. The cooperation of Hotel Owners' Association has been sought in the mapping project, the report of which will be later submitted to the district administration.
Service learning programme
According to the Principal Nirmala Jeyaraj, the students are getting exposure under Service Learning Programme and to work in a project that has local relevance.
