Special Correspondent

REMAINS: Files and other records destroyed in a fire at the post office in Kundah near Udhagamandalam on Thursday.

Udhagamandalam: The postmaster in charge of the Kundah post office near here ended his life in a bizarre manner on Thursday.

According to the police, early in the morning people, most of them employees of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), residing near the post office, had noticed smoke billowing out of the building. They with the help of fire and rescue service personnel extinguished it.

When they entered the building they found that most of the records and files had been charred. The burnt remains of a man were also found.

Prelimnary enquiries revealed that the postmaster Sivakumar (32) of Bikkatty had set the records on fire before immolating himself.

Though the exact reason which made him take the extreme step was not clear, it was suspected that he had indulged in considerable financial irregularities.

An internal audit had put him in a spot and it was stated that an inquiry was in the process of being conducted.

Some of the Kundah residents and surroundings said they were worried about the deposits they had made.
