Infusing life into dying arts

Staff Reporter

Performance of folk and traditional forms for students

CHENNAI: The masked man on stage comes out with a loud cry. A bunch of students in the auditorium reply with an "Ohhh... " Velu Saravanan of Azhi Kuzhandhaigal Nadaka Kuzhu from Pondicherry presented a mime comedy `Kadal Bhootham' at Rajah Annamalai Mandram recently. The occasion was a performance of folk and traditional art forms for students of Kavi Bharathi Vidyalaya, Tiruvottriyur.

Principal Poornima Narayan says that this is an attempt to give a fresh lease of life to dying art forms and introduce them to children.

Meena Suresh, Senior Principal, said that the whole programme, which included `karagattam', `mayilattam' and `kalaiyattam' was a collective effort by the ``class parents''.

President of the Class Parents Association of the School Esther Rathi said the parents got together to organise the programme and sell tickets to students and others.

After meeting expenses for organising the programme, the remaining money would go to the school as books for the library or equipment for the laboratory. Secretary of the association Ezhil Malar and treasurer Sangeetha Ekambaram co-ordinated the event.
