CHENNAI: The Chennai City police arrested Kovi Kannan (43) of Jambuliputhur village in Andipatti taluk, Theni district here on Thursday on charges of kidnapping a minor girl. He was remanded to judicial custody. Police said a gang kidnapped the girl from Pondicherry and brought her to Chennai on July 6. After detaining her in a place in Mambalam, Kannan allegedly took photographs of him exchanging garlands with the girl. After getting a forged certificate that she was a major, Kannan took her to his native village. On July 10, he married the minor girl and kept her in his custody for about 10 days. Despite complaints, when the police failed to search for the missing girl, the parents approached the court and filed a habeas corpus petition. Immediately, it came to light that a few policemen and officers were also reportedly involved in the kidnap case. While the department took action against the erring cops, a special team led by DCP Mourya arrested Kovi Kannan in Udumalpet and produced him before a court in Saidapet which remanded him to custody. Further investigation is on.
