Digital X-ray machine, CT scanner for GH

CHENNAI: Chennai's government hospitals cropped a bounty during the presentation of Rs.1921.28 crore health department demand in the Assembly on Thursday.

Among the demands sanctioned by the House were granting Centre of Excellence status to the Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Unit of the Stanley Medical College. The department, established in 1988 has the record of doing the highest number of pancreatic and liver surgeries, apart from publishing several research works and training of doctors both in India and abroad. It has also applied for and successfully received ISO accreditation in 200 and subsequently recertification.

The House also approved a transplantation tissue centre establishment at Stanley Medical College.

A digital X-ray machine, costing Rs.80 lakh will be installed at the Government General Hospital, here. This will help tide over the problems with lack of x-ray films, the Minister explained. A state of the art 64 Slice CT Scanner, purchased at a cost of Rs.5.5 crore will also be installed at the GH.

It is the first such machine to be brought for the public health sector in the State and it will provide services at subsidised rates for patients.

A lithotripsy machine, used to remove kidney stones, will be provided at the GH as also at the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

The Regional Ophthalmology Institute in Chennai will receive a grant of Rs.2.5 crore to upgrade its facilities and purchase modern equipment, while the Government Royapettah Hospital will get Rs.85.94 lakh to upgrade its ophthalmology, dermatology, paediatric, orthopaedics and nephrology departments.
