CHENNAI: Twentyone people living with HIV/AIDS learnt about raising funds and generating sustained income at a workshop conducted on Thursday. Organised by Genesis Welfare Trust, which has been working among HIV positive people, the workshop attempted to train the participants from Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts in fund raising and management for self-employment. As an initial step towards self-sufficiency, seven persons from each of these districts were chosen for training in marketing skills at the workshop. The programme focussed on teaching them strategies for fund raising, accountability of the fundraising organisation and communication skills. R. Thangadurai, general secretary of the trust, said several HIV positive women who lacked financial support were provided with tailoring machines to encourage self-employment. They were also taught how to market their products. The participants would in turn train the other persons in their districts, he said. The organisation, which was set up four years ago, decided to assist HIV positive persons in income generation and making them self-reliant besides supporting them in other ways such as medical aid, he added.
