MANGALORE: Organisations wanting to take out processions in the city may soon have to adhere to guidelines being formulated by the district police authorities in consultation with the district administration. The Police Department is studying judgments given by the Kerala High Court and the Supreme Court in this regard and will formulate guidelines based on it, B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, has said. Participating at a "meet-the-press" programme organised by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union here on Thursday, Mr. Dayananda said he would take up the issue with the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the District Magistrate, and come up with guidelines. Till now, station house officers or sub-divisional deputy superintendents of Police were dealing with the process of granting permissions for procession.
Undesired effect
He said that processions by various organisations through the city were having an undesired affect on society. One solution is to permit organisations to take out procession from Nehru Maidan to the Deputy Commissioner's office, a short distance. This would not greatly inconvenience road users in the city. On the issue of impolite behaviour by certain policemen with people, the Superintendent of Police said there has been a gradual change in this area over the years. With regards to the proposal for a police commissionerate in the city he said the State Cabinet has to take the final decision.
