CHENNAI : The Construction Workers Federation of India took out a rally here on Thursday to press various demands. It expressed concern over shortage of construction material and demanded, among other things, construction of godowns for sand and permission for lorries to carry three units of sand and bullock carts to take sand. The Federation has also requested that more places for quarrying sand be earmarked in districts that do not have sufficient quarries and that the petrol and diesel price hike be rolled back. Licensing of stone quarries and government-controlled prices for all construction material are other major demands. The Federation asked the Government to standardise welfare schemes across various labour boards, grant a monthly pension of Rs. 1000 to workers, provide medical insurance, reduce expenses involved in accessing welfare schemes and bring in legislation to protect unorganised sector workers. The rally was taken from Kamaraj statue to the State Guest House here. The Federation expressed appreciation of the various welfare schemes that the State Government has already implemented.
