CHENNAI: The Ambattur municipality is gearing up to begin emergency civic works before the onset of the northeast monsoon. The projects, which have remained non-starters for several months, are being revamped and plans are on to begin most of them before the rains. The municipality has decided to take up patch works on the damaged stretches of roads at Ambattur, including those dug for the underground drainage project and complete them in a month. Several roads in dire need of repair such as Korattur East Avenue Road, Park Road and MMM Hospital Road would be covered in the project. Blacktopping of nine severely damaged roads, including Korattur East and Central Avenue, Devar Nagar Road, Padi Kuppam Road and those at Mogappair and Anna Nagar Extension would be taken by September, said a municipal official. The Rs.6.4 crore project was floated for re-tender last week. Municipal Commissioner Chakrapani said that work orders had been given for about 420 pending civic works worth Rs. 14 crore and about 100 developmental works in various areas of Ambattur have begun. The problem that arose when the contractors did not take up the schemes on grounds of increasing rate of materials has been solved. Several areas, including Korattur, which were left in the dark owing to lack of streetlights, may be brightly lit by next month. The Commissioner said that the municipality had obtained materials worth Rs.10 lakh and the streetlights would be fitted in the required areas, he said. Another major problem of garbage disposal is also likely to be resolved soon. The municipality is taking measures to obtain approval from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board for the site at Pammathukulam. The 10-acre site at Sekkadu, which is near the dumping yard of Avadi municipality, has been in a `sharing dispute' for several years now. The municipality officials took up the issue with the Tiruvallur Collector for a quick solution. The Commissioner said that the Avadi municipality had already constructed a compound wall around their site. The proposed dumping site for Ambattur would be acquired in about a week and a compound wall would be built, he said.
