KOCHI: The first global meet of delegates of Syro-Malabar Catholics will be held here for three days from Friday. The meet, organised by the Syro-Malabar Bishops' Synodal Commission for the Evangelisation and Pastoral Care of the Migrants, is aimed at rekindling a sense of belonging to the Church, said Bishop Gregory Gregory Korotemprel, chairman of the commission, at a press conference here on Thursday. He said an estimated 8.5-lakh migrant Syro-Malabar Catholics lived outside the territory of the Church. "The global meet is a homecoming for the emigrants," he said. The meet was also an effort to congratulate the Syro-Malabar Catholics from across the globe for discharging their duties of re-evangelising countries and cultures. This would also be a "common venue and opportunity for sharing their experiences" for the Syro-Malabar Catholics, said Paul Thelekkat, official spokesman for the Syro-Malabar Church. Besides, the global meet would provide the Church with an opportunity to realise its responsibilities towards the pastoral care of its migrant faithful wherever they were, he added. Nearly 400 delegates were expected to participate in the meet at St. Thomas Mount, Kakkanadu, and at Renewal Centre, Kaloor. An estimated 1.2 lakh Syro-Malabar Catholics lived in the U.S. and Canada.
