HYDERABAD: The annual `Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Run' will be organised on August 20 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister, according to V. Hanumanth Rao, MP. At a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Rao said some 5,000 sportspersons and schoolchildren would take part in the run to be flagged off from four different venues in the twin cities Mahatma Gandhi statue in Secunderabad, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar statue on Tank Bund, Babu Jagjivan Ram statue at Lal Bahadur Stadium and Jawaharlal Nehru statue in Abids at 7.30 a.m. He said that the run, organised with the help of Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association and Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, was aimed at spreading sports culture, as it was late Rajiv Gandhi who was instrumental in Delhi being able to host the 1982 Asian Games. "He had a dream to see India develop as a major sporting power too," Mr. Rao said. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and APCC chief K. Keshava Rao will grace the concluding function at Rajiv Gandhi Statue (Somajiguda) at 9.30 a.m.
Stipend
Mr. Rao also said that two best talented youngsters, to be named by a panel from the APOA, would be given a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,000 each for the next one year in recognition of their achievements.
