"Tainted" MCD engineers back on sensitive job

Staff Reporter

Councillors have strongly objected to this move `Decision has been taken as there is a shortage of staff and these junior engineers are needed'

NEW DELHI: Eight junior engineers who were charge-sheeted in the recent past for allowing illegal constructions in their areas have been transferred back by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to its Building Department.

After being found guilty of failure to check mushrooming of unauthorised constructions in the areas under their jurisdiction, the MCD had charge-sheeted these junior engineers and they were given "non-sensitive" posts. But now they have again been shifted to the Building Department where they will "check" illegal constructions in their areas.

However, Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam said the decision had been taken as there was a shortage of staff and these junior engineers were needed to carry out the routine job. But the Municipal Councillors have strongly objected to this move and criticised Mr. Nigam for posting "tainted" engineers back on sensitive job, which they said would affect the civic body's efforts to check illegal constructions in the city.

Similarly, MCD Standing Committee Chairman J. K. Sharma on Thursday asked Mr. Nigam to immediately suspend the Deputy Commissioner and the Executive Engineer of the Karol Bagh zone for misleading the area's Court Commissioner by giving false information about illegal structures and allowing unauthorised constructions in their area.

Information

Referring to a recent inspection by the Court Commissioner at Rama Road in Karol Bagh in which two junior engineers and one assistant engineer were suspended for giving false information to him, Mr. Sharma said the Deputy Commissioner and the Executive Engineers were also equally responsible for this and should remain suspended till a detailed report on the issue is given by the Vigilance department.
