65-year-old man immolates himself

NEW DELHI: A 65-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by setting himself afire at his Mandawali residence in East Delhi on Thursday. He was apparently depressed due to a prolonged illness.

According to the police, it all happened around 6-30 p.m. when Satyendra allegedly set himself on fire in his Konark Apartments flat. His wife had gone out to buy vegetables. She later told the police that Satyendra suffered from high blood pressure and was admitted to a nearby hospital a couple of days ago. He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday.

Satyendra's son and daughter-in-law live in Mumbai.

The local police have initiated inquest proceedings.

Man arrested for carjacking

NEW DELHI: A young man allegedly involved in a carjacking case was arrested at Mayapuri in South-West Delhi on Wednesday.

According to the police, the accused, 22-year-old Jaswant, was arrested when he was driving a white Santro car bearing a defective registration number plate. The police claim to have recovered a loaded country-made pistol from his possession. The car was found stolen from Kharkhoda in Haryana.

During interrogation, the man allegedly disclosed that on Tuesday evening he along with his accomplices Pardeshi and Pradeep hired the Santro car from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh for Sonepat.

At gunpoint, the accused asked the driver, Nassir to stop the car in an isolated place near Kharkhoda in the Sonepat area. They allegedly robbed Nassir of Rs. 800 and dumped him there after tying his hands and legs.

Nassir somehow freed himself and reported the matter to the local police, following which a case was registered at the Kharkhoda police station. Jaswant told the police that he had come to Mayapuri to dispose of the car.

While the Haryana police have been informed about the arrest, a hunt has been launched for Jaswant's accomplices.

Kidnapped boy rescued

NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old boy kidnapped from Usmanpur in North-East Delhi on November 30 last year has been rescued by the police. The alleged kidnapper, a practitioner of black magic, has been arrested.

According to the police, Deepak, son of Jitender Kumar of Usmanpur, had gone missing from a Diwali mela in Shastri Park. Initial investigations did not reveal anything concrete.

However, on August 13, the police received a tip-off about Deepak being held captive at Bhabharua village in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh. A raid was carried out and the accused, Mohammad Khalid, was arrested in his house and the child was rescued. Deepak was restored to his parents. The police said Khalid had kidnapped Deepak to make him his assistant. "He used to torture and harass him and also did not allow him to speak to anybody."

Labourer killed in accident

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old labourer was killed and two others were injured when a truck overturned at Mehrauli in South Delhi on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Anjar, a resident of Bihar. The two other injured were admitted to a nearby hospital.

A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Mehrauli police station against the truck driver.
