Temple car festival celebrated

Special Correspondent

Large number of people from Tamil Nadu, Pondy participated

Pondicherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, accompanied by Education Minister M. O. H. F. Shah Jahan and Pattali Makkal Katchi legislator K. R. Anandharaman, pulled the chariot of Sri Sengazhuneer Amman at the annual temple car festival at Veerampattinam in Ariyankuppam commune panchayat limits near here on Friday.

The special officer of the temple C. Narayanasamy and the Commissioner, Hindu Religious Institutions Department, S. Thulasiraman, received the Chief Minister and others on arrival at the temple.

Mr. Rangasamy and the collector of Pondicherry, G. Theva Needhi Dhas, later offered worship at the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Although Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi was scheduled to pull the chariot (in keeping with the tradition from pre merger days that the constitutional head of the state drags the chariot) he could not participate, as was reportedly away in Chennai for an important engagement.

People from Pondicherry and the neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu participated in the car festival. All educational institutions remained closed on Friday, while it was a restricted holiday for Government staff to enable them to participate in the festival.
