Change approach towards learning, students told

Staff Reporter

`Road to success includes excellence and speed'

ERODE: Today's students, who are sailing on the wave of past 50 years' invention and innovation, should change their approach to learning, search for knowledge, work, etc., P. K. Ponnuswamy, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras and Madurai Kamaraj University, has said.

Addressing students of the Vellalar College for Women at the convocation day on Friday, he said the approach to education had changed in that syllabus and notes no longer completed education.

Today it was use of materials and objects to serve a common good.

In science, he said the importance was now more on computation. "We believed that theory and experiments are the essential tools to find answers to scientific questions. But now, computation is the major methodology to scientific inquiries." Without computation, success in human genome project would have been impossible, he added.

Elaborating his `change in approach' theory further, Mr. Ponnuswamy said, the road to success was not merely quality and social relevance. It also included excellence and speed - two key parameters in ensuring success.

Apart from the above, the former Vice-Chancellor also laid emphasis on right perception, attitude and satisfaction. A pleasing personality was also imperative, he added.

Seven hundred and fifteen students received their degrees. Among them, 14 secured university ranks. T. Kanchanamala of B.B.M., B. Mohamoodha Lubna of B.Com (CA), D. Sabitha of MFC and K. Mekala of M.Com secured gold medals. The Principal of the college, Chandra Thangavel, welcomed the gathering.
