Corrections and clarifications
Many readers have pointed out that paragraph four in the analysis "A transformed Manmohan" (August 18, 2006) did not make sense as words were missing. The sentences should have been: "He [Manmohan Singh] reminded the [Rajya Sabha] House that as member (finance) of the Atomic Energy Commission, he has worked with distinguished nuclear professionals like H.N. Sethna and P.K. Iyengar. [Paragraph five begins here] And, then a bit of working philosophy. Status quo is always comfortable, but the challenge lies in breaking out of the familiar terrain, and to cope imaginatively and confidently with `uncertainty.'" (The missing part is what is in italics. It was an editing error.)
The sentence in "Commission to probe water release from Ukai dam" (August 18, 2006) was: "The commission would be constituted by the retired judge of the Gujarat High Court, Sugnaben Bhatt, and he would be assisted by the retired secretary of the Narmada department, R.D. Soni, who also was the director of irrigation canals in the State." A reader felt that "he" should have been "she". The reader is right. The report was on how the Gujarat Government is to look into the steps taken by the authorities in releasing water from the Ukai dam, which then flooded Surat city.
The strapline and the last sentence in "Only democracy can break Pakistan terror link", by Benazir Bhutto (Op-Ed, August 18, 2006), was: "A democratic Pakistan, free from the yolk of military dictatorship, would cease to be the petri dish of the pandemic of international terrorism." A few readers have pointed out the word "yolk" should have been "yoke". The error was corrected in later editions.
In "Supplement Government's efforts, Karunanidhi urges NGOs" (Chennai city, August 18, 2006, page 6), Mr. K. Anbazhagan has been referred to as [Tamil Nadu's] Education Minister. He is the Finance Minister.
In "CAG cites irregularities in job scheme" (August 18, 2006), the strapline was: "These include diversion of funds and foodgrains, failure of non-payment of wages." As a reader says, it should have been "These include diversion of funds and foodgrains, non-payment of wages."
