Sadbhawana Day pledge administered

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday administered Sadbhawana Day pledge to Government employees and officers at the Secretariat on Friday.

Mr. Karunanidhi administered the pledge on promoting communal harmony and amity at a function held on the Parade Ground in Fort St.George to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He also offered floral tributes to the portrait of the leader.

Legislators and Ministers who were present also took the pledge. — Special Correspondent

"Take action against LTTE supporters"

CHENNAI: Congress legislator Arul Anabarasu has urged the State Government to take stringent action against those who openly supported the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the State.

Participating in a discussion in the Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Anbarasu said of late some political leaders in the State were openly canvassing support and issuing statements in favour of the LTTE. The Congress was providing support to suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka but it was against the LTTE which was behind the assassination of Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi, he added. — Special Correspondent

Bill introduced

CHENNAI: A Bill to extend the term of office of Special Officers of Kotakatchiyendal, Nattarmangalam, Keeripatti and Pappapatti village pancharyats with retrospective effect from April 25, for a further period of six months by amending the Tamil Nadu Panchayat Act was introduced in the Assembly on Friday. Local Administration and Rural Development Minister M.K. Stalin introduced the Bill. — Special Correspondent

Barnala falls ill

CHANDIGARH: Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala who was on his way from New Delhi to Chandigarh by road, fell ill near Panipat on Friday afternoon.

According to highly placed sources, Mr. Barnala reportedly suffered an attack of vertigo due to cervical spondylitis and was rendered medical treatment. He was taken to the Skylark Tourist Complex in Panipat for rest and his doctor was summoned from Patiala. — Special Correspondent

Chennai official jailed for demanding bribe

Kochi: The CBI Special Court here on Friday sentenced B.J. Sridhar, Deputy Director, Department of Mines Safety, Chennai, to three-year imprisonment for demanding a bribe from a quarry owner.

The court imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 on him. The court found Sridhar guilty of offences under section 13 (ii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The accused demanded bribe for not taking action against the owner for operating his illegal granite quarry.

SAG centre to be inaugurated on Sunday

NAGAPATTINAM: The Special Area Games (SAG) centre of the Sports Authority of India will be inaugurated by Mani Shankar Aiyar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs and Sports, at Rajan Thottam in Mayiladuturai in Nagapattinam district on Sunday.

R. Subramanian, Administrator of SAI-SAG centre, Mayiladuturai, told The Hindu on Friday that the centre had selected 120 players (boys and girls) in athletics, volleyball, basketball, hockey and weightlifting under residential and day boarding scheme. He said in connection with the inauguration of the centre, a "Sathbhavana" would be organised from Railway overbridge to Rajan Thottam in Mayiladuturai at 4 p.m. on Sunday. — Staff Reporter

Man found murdered

TIRUNELVELI: A 21-year-old man was found murdered near a ground at Palayamkottai on Friday.

The deceased was identified as G. Manivannan (21), son of a conservancy worker.

Two get life term

Tirunelveli: A court here sentenced Mariappan (52) and Lakshmanan (24) to life imprisonment for murdering Madasamy, brother of Mariappan, at Sankarankoil last year. The duo had murdered Mariappan owing to enmity.

Man arrested

Tuticorin: Ravindran (27) was arrested at Tharuvaikulam on Thursday for intimidating a policeman.

The police said the accused obstructed Rasaiyan, a head constable on duty in front of the Bhathrakaliammankoil at Tharuvaikulam, from discharging his duty. The incident occurred when the policeman asked Ravindran to move away from a group of women standing there.

Commits suicide

Tuticorin: A 42-year-old man, Muniyasamy, committed suicide by hanging at Vetrilvelpuram near here on Thursday.

He was said to be suffering from a chronic ailment, which prompted him to take the extreme step.

One held for theft

Tuticorin: The police on Friday arrested A. Selvaraj for stealing a chain and mobile phone from a house here on Thursday evening.

According to police sources, the accused stole them from the house of Jeyakumar (38) who had kept the front door unlocked.

The police recovered the stolen goods worth Rs. 6,000 from the accused.

Nagercoil: The Collector, Sunil Paliwal, administered Communal Harmony Day pledge to the employees to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the taluk office in Thuckalay on Friday In a similar occasion, Collectorate staff led by the District Revenue officer, Jothi Nirmala, took the oath in Nagercoil.

140 bags of PDS rice seized, two arrested

THENI: Food Cell police seized 140 bags of rice meant for public distribution system from a godown in Silvarpatti village near here on Friday. Two persons were arrested in this connection. Acting on a tip-off, a special food cell squad led by Inspector Gunasekaran, during a surprise raid, found a lorry with 70 bags of PDS rice and 70 bags of rice hidden in the godown. The arrested informed the police that they engaged in repacking and smuggling PDS rice in the godown.

The arrested were Karuppu alais Gunasekaran, owner of the godown and lorry driver Sivasamy.

Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam stood at 121.60 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 2,590 cusecs and a discharge of 1,000 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 43.60 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 657 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3868 mcft.

Suicide

ERODE: A person committed suicide by drinking poison in the presence of his wife on Friday. According to the police, Devi (27), wife of Periyasamy, had lodged a complaint in the Mallasamudram police station in Salem district against her husband stating that he tried to kill her. Then she came to Senapathypalayam near Erode and was staying with her parents. Periysamy came to the house and asked Devi to withdraw the complaint filed against him. Following her refusal, he consumed poison he had brought and died.

The Erode Taluk police are investigating.

Counterfeit currency seized

ERODE: The Erode Town Police on Thursday night arrested a woman near the Government Headquarters Hospital with nine Rs. 100 notes. According to the police, a woman after purchasing clothes from a street vendor near the Government Headquarters Hospital here gave him Rs. 100. The vendor, Murugesan, who suspected the currency to be fake, informed the police. The woman was arrested and a total of nine Rs. 100 notes were seized from her possession. Further investigation is on.

ATTUR: The Salem District Police arrested four persons on the charge of selling illicit liquor near Talavasal here recently. Sources said a team of police personnel conducted a raid in Talavasal and found four persons selling illicit liquor. They were arrested and 120 litres of illicit liquor were seized from them.

Puja performed

Salem: Sri Vishnupathy committee performed Sri Vishnupathy puja in Sri Chenraya Perumal Temple here on Thursday. According to a release, Vastu homam, Dhanwantri homam, Sri Suktham, Purusha Suktham, Sri Ganapathy puja and Saraswathy homam were performed. The committee distributed notebooks, pencils and clothes to the poor children.

Man killed

KULITHALAI: A man killed his wife's paramour before he ended his life near here on Thursday. T. Balakrishnan, 40, of Mela Ariyampatti near here dropped a boulder on the head of N. Rengar, 40, a casual labourer in his farm, after coming to know that Rengar had developed illicit intimacy with his wife. Rengar died on the spot. Balakrishnan hung himself to death, police said.

Constable dies in road accident

PUDUKOTTAI: A 45-year-old police constable, Chelladurai, attached to the Meemisal station, who suffered serious head injuries in a road accident a couple of days ago, succumbed to the injuries at the Government Hospital here on Thursday night.

Police said the constable was thrown off the two-wheeler he was riding, after being rammed by a van at Tirukokaranam.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.

2,813 work to be executed

PERAMBALUR: Under the Sampoorna Gramin Rojgar Yojana scheme, as many as 2,813 work will be executed in the district at an expenditure of Rs.10.32 crore.

Collector Anil Meshram said the outlay included rice component of 3,967 tonnes. Work like laying cement roads, desilting and deepening of tanks and supply channels, construction of noon meal centres and kitchens and setting up of pathway to burial ground would be taken up under the programme, he said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 118.41 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Friday. The inflow was 60,527 cusecs and the outflow 24,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
