TIRUCHI: Four persons, including a four-year old girl and her mother, were killed on the spot when an autorickshaw in which they were travelling was hit by a train at an unmanned railway level crossing near Kambarasampettai on the outskirts of the city on Friday.

The autorickshaw driver J. Ravi sustained grievous injuries while trying to jump out of the vehicle and was admitted to K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital.

The vehicle was hit by the Tiruchi-Palghat passenger (Train No.887) at around 1.30 p.m., minutes after it left the Tiruchi Fort station. The accident took place between Fort and Mutharasanallur stations on the Tiruchi-Karur section.

The deceased were identified as S. Vijayalakshmi (30) of Rajalakshmi Nagar, Murungapettai, her daughter S. Varsha, K. Akilandeswari (35) of North Andar Street and S. Prema (42) of Kambarasampettai Agraharam.

Varsha, a kindergarten student at a private school in Kambarasampettai Agraharam, was ill and her mother was taking her to a doctor when the accident took place.

The driver had picked up the other two passengers while on his way to Chathram bus stand.

He reportedly took a detour as the nearby railway gate was closed.

The vehicle got stuck on the track and was hit by the train even as people around raised an alarm.

Collector Ashish Vachhani, Additional Divisional Railway Manager S. Balachandran, Divisional Safety Officer S. Mani and Superintendent of Railway Police Tiruchi, G. Karthikeyan, visited the site.
