KURNOOL: Dry spell in July and the first week of August badly affected agriculture operations in Adoni division. According to the Agriculture Department, six mandals recorded scanty rainfall with deficit being between 60 and 99 per cent. The mandals were Chagalamarri, Dornipadu, Kowthalam, Aluru, Holagunda and Halaharvi. Also, 27 other mandals recorded deficit rainfall with deviation being between 20 to 59 per cent. However, officials said agriculture operations were hit in 13 mandals in the district with a large uncovered area and withering crops in the sown area.In July, Holagunda, Alur and Aspari mandals almost received no rainfall bringing to halt all agriculture operations. A delegation of CPI (M) party led by district secretary T. Shadrak toured the mandals in Adoni division on Friday and found appalling conditions. According to him, migration of labourers was taking place this year during peak season too because of drought. Mr. Shadrak urged the district administration to take immediate steps to provide succour to farmers and agriculture workers. He wanted the Government to supply sunflower seed at 30 per cent cost instead of 66 per cent. In Chippagiri, out of 300 families in SC locality, about 100 locked their houses and migrated.
Double tragedy
The farmers of Kowthalam were inflicted by double tragedy. While drought hit sowing, the flood to Tungabhadra caused damage to standing crops along with river course and electric pumpsets.
