Kozhikode: A committee with Mayor M. Bhaskaran as chairman and Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef as general convener has been constituted to organise the year-long programmes to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the formation of the Kozhikode Corporation. Corporation councillors, MPs, MLAs, former MLAs, cultural leaders, mediapersons, businessmen, and leaders of political parties have been included in the committee. Several sub-committees were also formed at a meeting held at the Tagore Centenary Theatre here on Friday. Jnanpith laureate M.T. Vasudevan Nair said the corporation should focus on improving the lives of the people. Infrastructure facilities needed to be improved. Drinking water shortage was a problem and safe disposal of garbage was yet to become a realit. Novelist P. Valsala accused the civic authorities of dumping garbage collected from the city in neighbouring Karnataka. She demanded that the corporation construct a house for Hindustani composer Saratchandra Marathe who had been living here for long. Writer U.A. Khader flayed the civic body for dumping waste from the city in Tamil Nadu. Playwright K.T. Mohammed spoke about working with the Postal Department here in 1945. Zamorin P.K. Raja said Kozhikode was known as the city of truth since olden times.
