Spate of burglaries in Kozhikode

LAW &ORDER The police have initiated steps to arrest the rising incidence of crime in Kozhikode city, writes Biju Govind.

The Corporation Council and the trading community have asked the police to arrest the rising incidence of theft in the city. At least half-a-dozen business establishments and an equal number of houses were the targets of burglars on Independence Day. Robbery during daytime was also reported from various places on Thursday and Friday.

Burglars broke decamped with 15 sovereigns of gold from a house at Thondayad when the occupant was away between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday. Another burglary was reported from Kottully.

A patient admitted to the casualty ward of the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (MCH) was robbed of cash. Thieves broke into some shops on Sweet Meat Street, Court Road and Aravind Ghosh Road on Wednesday. Stationery goods were taken away from the godown of a business establishment functioning in K.M. Building. A few shops on G.H. Road were also burgled.

Fourteen sovereigns of gold, cash and a motorcycle were stolen from the house of a doctor at Chevayur on Thursday. In another incident, seven sovereigns of gold were stolen from a house in the same area.

At its meeting on Friday, the Corporation Council expressed concern at the spurt in crime. The councillors asked the police to be stringent in dealing with the culprits.

The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi City Regional Committee has demanded that the police intensify night patrolling. C.P. Abdul Rahman, unit chairman, asked the police to constitute a special team led by a sub-inspector to bring to book the culprits. He urged Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay to convene a meeting with traders.

Assistant Commissioner (District Crime Record Bureau) T.F. Xavier said a meeting of the presidents and secretaries of residents' associations would be held at the Police Club at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The meeting, to be attended by Mr. Upadhyay, would discuss the problems of the residents. Suggestions were invited from the office-bearers on the law and order situation, in the city, Mr. Xavier said
