Gandhian to inaugurate Dasara festival

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Friday said senior Gandhian G. Narayan would inaugurate the Dasara festival in Mysore this year. He was speaking to presspersons after the foundation laying ceremony of buildings at Maharani Women's Arts and Science College. — Staff Reporter

Udasi visiting Udupi

Udupi: Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister C.M. Udasi will visit Udupi district on Saturday. A press release issued by the Department of Information here on Friday said Mr. Udasi would arrive at Karkala at 10 a.m. He would take part in civic functions before leaving for Hanagal, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

BANGALORE: State Janata Dal (Secular) vice-president and president of the Karnataka Raju Kshatriya Sangha L.K. Raju has been chosen for this year's Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award instituted by the National Integration and Economic Council, New Delhi. The award will be presented to him on August 19 at a function to be held at the India International Trade Centre. New Delhi. Governor of Jharkhand Syed Sibtey Razi will present the award to Mr. Raju and others.

Bangalore: The Karnataka State Alternative Medicine Practitioners Association has urged the Government to allow those who practiced alternative medicine in rural areas to provide primary treatment by giving allopathic medicines to the people there. Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Babu Reddy, president of the association, said the practice of alternative medicine practitioners in rural areas, who had been practicing for 30 years to 40 years, should be regularised. "A law should be brought in to allow alternative medical practitioners to continue their practice," he said, in the wake of raids on various clinics of such practitioners ordered by the Health and Family Welfare Minister.

Help for flood-hit

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy has said that the Government has decided to take up permanent measures to rehabilitate and help those affected by floods and drought in the State. Speaking at a function to felicitate journalist S.V. Jayasheela Rao here on Friday, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Government would take up all relief, rescue and rehabilitation works on its own without waiting for assistance from the Union Government. As a first step it would release Rs. 23 crore for rehabilitating and helping those affected by the floods in the Krishna and the Bhima in north Karnataka, he added.

Bicycles distributed to girl students

Bidar: The Government is distributing free bicycles to girl students to attract them to high schools, district in-charge Minister Bandeppa Kashempur said here on Friday. Speaking after distributing bicycles to girl students at Kamthana village in Bidar taluk, he said the Government would distribute bicycles to 1.75 lakh girl students at a cost of Rs. 35 crore. In Bidar district, 7,305 girl students would be given bicycles. — Staff Correspondent

SHIMOGA: Dr. Shivaram Karanth Children's Award for 2005, instituted by the Karnataka Sangh, was conferred on Kannada writer N. Srinivas Udupa here on Thursday evening. Writer A.S. Venugopal Rao, who delivered the keynote address, spoke on the contribution of Mr. Udupa to Kannada literature, particularly children's literature. Karnataka Sangh president K.R.Vijaya Sridhar conferred the award on Mr. Udupa. — Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA: Autorickshaw drivers here went on a strike on Friday demanding immediate opening of a liquefied petroleum gas station in Shimoga in view of the sharp rise in petrol price and also to prevent air pollution. In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, the drivers said the gas station was not sanctioned to Shimoga city despite repeated representations. They said that the stringent action being taken by the staff of the Food and Civil Supplies Department against autorickshaws fitted with domestic LPG cylinders had been causing hardship to them. — Special Correspondent

Couple arrested

MYSORE: The K.R. Police and the City Crime Branch have arrested a couple on the charge of burglary and have recovered from them gold ornaments worth Rs. 90,000. The police said Gowramma (21) and V. Manju (24) were involved in the burglary of a house in Lakshmipuram area. They said the duo had gained entry into the residence of Sharathchandra Raje Urs on August 12, and had decamped with gold ornaments. — Staff Correspondent
