Devanahalli (Bangalore Rural District): It is pedalling their way to school for 1.75 lakh girls in Karnataka with the coalition Government on Friday launching a programme to distribute bicycles to schoolgirls from below poverty line (BPL) families. The programme was launched as per the announcement made in the State budget for 2006-07 by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. The eligible girls will be receiving Hercules brand bicycles costing Rs. 2,300 each. Beaming with joy, the schoolgirls rode the bicycles in front of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Mr. Yediyurappa at a function held on the ground of the local government junior college. All bicycles have the "Suvarna Karnataka" symbol etched on them. In an emotional and combative speech, Mr. Yediyurappa hit out at the Opposition parties for their criticism of the State budget.
