CHENNAI: Hamsadhwani's 2006 Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award was conferred on ophthalmologist S.S. Badrinath, Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, by C.V. Karthik Narayanan, Chairman and Managing Director, UCAL Products, and Trustee, Music Academy. The award was given to Dr. Badrinath in recognition of his "unparalleled and sustained social and community care service." A shawl and a citation were handed over to Dr. Badrinath by Mr. Narayanan. The occasion was the 17th anniversary of Hamsadhwani. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Badrinath sought the support and cooperation of the general public and philanthropists to continue the "missionary zeal of Sankara Nethralaya." Dr. Rajan Ravichandran, Director, Madras Institute of Nephrology, who read out the citation, described Sankara Nethralaya as an "eye care bank" of Asia and an example of social responsibility of private sector medical care. R. Ramachandran, founder-secretary, Hamsadhwani, said the organisation was thankful to Dr. Badrinath for accepting the award. He thanked M. Murali, of Sri Krishna Sweets, for extending a helping hand to support all the endeavours of Hamsadhwani.
