New law to benefit weaker sections, Kerala tells apex court

New Delhi: The Kerala Government on Friday justified in the Supreme Court enactment of legislation to regulate admissions and streamline fee structure in private, unaided medical, engineering and other professional institutions.

Counsel's submission

K.K. Venugopal, senior counsel appearing for the State, told a Bench consisting of Justices K.G. Balakrishnan and D.K. Jain that the Kerala Professional Colleges or Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee, Regulation of Admissions, Fixation of Non-Exploitative Fee and Other Measures to Ensure Equity and Excellence in Professional Education) Act, 2006 was intended to benefit the weaker sections.
