Kisan Sabha plea

HYDERABAD: All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha has asked the Central and State Governments to stop acquiring agricultural and forestlands for benefiting MNCs and corporate houses.

The sabha wanted the Governments to stop police repression and harassment of people fighting against forcible displacement of tribals and farmers. AIKMS central executive committee (CEC) that met here on Friday decided to launch a nationwide campaign against displacement of farmers and tribals from September 15 to October 15. - Special Correspondent

JNTU first year classes

HYDERABAD: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University will be commencing the first year class work for various undergraduate and PG programmes from August 21 in JNTU constituent and affiliated colleges.

The first year BFA will begin on Monday and first year B. Tech on August 28 except for JNTU College of Engineering, Pulivendula, where the course will commence on August 31. B. Arch will start on September 1. The first semester M. Tech, MCA, M.Arch., M.Sc and MURP will begin on September 4. - Staff Reporter

LLB class work

VISAKHAPATNAM: Class work for first year of three-year and five-year LLB courses will commence on August 28. Students who have been admitted into these courses have to report to the Principals of respective colleges along with their admission cards, Convener of the Law Common Entrance Test 2006 R. Flood level recedes

KURNOOL: The flood in the Tungabhadra river declined to 57,033 cusecs at KC Canal barrage at Sunkesula near here. Meanwhile, the inflow into the TB dam at Hospet was 90,068 cusecs and the outflow 70,588 cusecs.

The Srisailam reservoir level remained at 880.50 ft. The inflow was 5.26 lakh cusecs and the outflow 5.92 lakh cusecs. - Staff Reporter

13 held for raid

KADAPA: The Kadapa One Town police on Friday arrested 13 persons in connection with Thursday's ransacking of the office of DFO (Flying Squad) in protest against booking of a case on Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy after seizing six tonnes of firewood.

Chandra, A. Sahadev Reddy and 11 others were arrested, according to the police. Basing on an enquiry and evidences, the other accused persons would be arrested, they said. - Staff Reporter

Kidnap case registered

ADILABAD: The One Town police on Friday registered a kidnap case based on the averments made by Shailaja, 12, a class V student of a private school here. According to Sub Inspector L. Jeevan Reddy, Shailaja said she was kidnapped from Adilabad town by strangers who drugged her and took her in a jeep. She also told the police that there were three other girls, also drugged in the jeep. Shailaja said she managed to escape when the kidnappers were having lunch at an isolated spot at Gudihatnoor. - Staff Reporter

Sand lorries seized

NALGONDA: In a major swoop on illegal transportation of sand, the revenue officials on Thursday seized 26 lorries and imposed heavy penalties on the vehicle owners.

In a midnight operation, a team led by Nalgonda Mandal Revenue Officer Moti Lal stopped the sand-laden lorries that were on their way to Hyderabad from Nalgonda. The lorries were taken to the rural police station, where a penalty of Rs. 10,000 per lorry was imposed. - Staff Reporter

Medical staff suspended

Sangareddy: Medak Collector B. Venkatesam who embarked on a surprise visit to Kolcharam, Siddipet, Gajwel, Mirdoddi and Doultabad mandals in the last 48 hours suspended two doctors, a health assistant and one senior assistant in the MRO office for negligence of duties. The Collector who stayed overnight in Siddipet continued his visits on Friday too. - Staff Reporter

Three women get Ph.Ds

TIRUPATI: SV University has awarded a Ph.D in psychology to K. Prameela for her research work on `Self-confidence in relation to achievement, motivation, fear of failure and self-confidence among college students'. SP Women's University has awarded a Ph.D in women's studies to D.S. Manimala for her study on `Girl child labour in Chandragiri mandal of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh'. SPMVV has awarded a Ph. D in applied mathematics to Indrani Pramod Kelkar for her research work on `Some studies on domination parameters of butterfly graphs'. Staff Reporter

Vice-sarpanch elected

KADAPA: A Congress supporter Rathnapu Ramana Reddy was unanimously elected vice-sarpanch of Somireddipalle panchayat in Brahmamgari Matham mandal on Friday. Election Officer Mallikarjuna Reddy declared Ramana Reddy elected in the meeting, which was attended by all 11 panchayat ward members. Staff Reporter

Five houses gutted

KADAPA: Five thatched houses were gutted in a fire accident in Chennampalle Mitta in Badvel mandal on Friday. The house of Alluru Obulapathi caught fire while his daughter was cooking food and also engulfed the neighbouring houses, causing a loss of nearly Rs. 30,000, according to police. Staff Reporter

Bhajan contests

KADAPA: TTD's Dharma Prachara Parishad will conduct a district-level bhajan competition at TTD kalyana mantapam here, Parishad coordinator Prakash Reddy said in a statement. Cultural groups can take part in pandari bhajana, chekka bhajana, kuluku bhajana, kolatam, jada kolatam competitions, he said. Staff Reporter

KADAPA: AISF activists staged a dharna at Lakkireddipalle on Friday demanding better facilities in social welfare hostels. AISF leaders Srinivasulu, Lenin, Varun Kumar and Dhana Kumar alleged that social welfare hostels lacked basic amenities posing hardships to students. Staff Reporter
