Speaker wrong, say opposition parties

HYDERABAD: The opposition parties took exception to the abrupt adjournment of the House by Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy on Friday without Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's reply to the lengthy debate on floods.

Members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) alleged that the Government wanted to avoid embarrassment as it had miserably failed in taking up relief measures in the flood-affected areas.

`Wants to avoid scrutiny'

N. Janardhan Reddy (TDP) said that by prolonging the debate for a few days, the Government wanted to avoid scrutiny of controversial issues such as the auction of Government lands and failure to control the spread of chikungunya.

N. Narsimhaiah (CPI-M) faulted the Speaker for adjourning the House on the ground that the Central team was in the State while E. Rajender (TRS) said the ruling party wanted to "waste precious time of the House" by continuing the debate on floods.

CPI observation

Chada Venkat Reddy (CPI) said the Government would have been in a better position to present a detailed report to the Central team had the debate concluded today.
