Schemes to reduce cultivation cost

Staff Correspondent

NHM to provide Rs. 4,000 an acre to those who take up organic horticulture

Bidar: The National Horticulture Mission has come up with innovative schemes to help farmers to reduce their cultivation cost and increase profit.

The mission will provide an incentive of Rs. 4,000 an acre to farmers, groups, associations or educational institutions to take up organic horticulture. This one-time grant is available for cultivation of up to 10 acres. The precondition is the beneficiary should be an organic farmer.

Farmers who build a compost pit or vermin-compost or "Jeeva Chaitanya" (bio-dynamic compost) preparation unit will be given a 50 per cent subsidy on the construction cost. Farmers can avail themselves of a maximum of Rs. 10,000 for one unit under the scheme.

Farmers can also avail themselves of half the cost incurred on upgrading a vermin-compost unit or a bio-digester compost preparation unit. The maximum assistance available under this scheme is Rs. 30,000 for any unit. Those interested in making use of subsidy on a biodynamic unit should be rearing cattle or sheep or goats. Beneficiaries of one scheme cannot avail themselves of benefits of other schemes.

Micro irrigation farmers can get subsidies ranging from 50 to 75 per cent under the Central Micro Irrigation Scheme. Subsidies are available for a maximum of five hectares. A subsidy of 75 per cent is available to the first two hectares and 50 per cent subsidy for the next three hectares. A 50 per cent subsidy will be given on the cost incurred on sprinkler. However, for the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, subsidy will be given only to two hectares.
