GULBARGA: The district administration has taken steps to provide relief material to the families affected by floods on the banks of the Bhima and Krishna. Water from the Ujjini and Veerbhatkal reservoirs in Maharashtra is being released into the Bhima, resulting in a slight increase in the water level in the river. The situation in many affected villages on the banks of the Bhima has improved. However, it is grim on the banks of the Krishna in the wake of the heavy inflow into the Alamatti balancing reservoir and release of water from the Narayanpur dam into the river. Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey told The Hindu on Thursday that affected families had been identified for providing relief. A sum of Rs. 1,000, 20 kg of rice, 3 kg of pulses, and 10 litres of kerosene would be given to each family. Mr. Pandey said only the families that had been shifted to relief centres and other safe places would be given assistance. Appealing to voluntary agencies to help the district administration in extending relief material to the affected families, he said non-governmental organisations such as World Vision and the Chennai-based Catholic Relief Society had come forward with relief material to help the victims. He said the district administration had received relief material and they were being sent to affected areas in Afzalpur, Jewargi and Chitapur taluks in the district for distribution. Meanwhile, Mr. Pandey said UNICEF had expressed its desire to provide assistance and it was expected to reach the district administration soon. Referring to the losses because of floods, Mr. Pandey said the district administration had formed teams to conduct a survey before August 31. On the threat of outbreak of diseases in the affected areas, Mr. Pandey said medical teams had been sent to such places to take up precautionary measures. A medical officer had been posted on a temporary basis in each affected village. District Health and Family Officer Nalini Namoshi was monitoring the situation.
